If OS X can run on x86, why not come out with Apple brand computers built on x86 in addition to those based on the PPC. Then Apple would not be at the mercy of one company or one chip. It would put pressure on both PPC and x86 sides to put out better hardware and WE THE CUSTOMERS AND APPLE WOULD BE THE WINNERS! It would also end the debate whether the x86 or PPC architecture is fastest.
I could see it now. Jobs giving a keynote address with a x86 machine and a PPC machine both running OS X side by side, both Apple branded machines. Heck, add the Power4 to the mix too. Apple should end up with an OS that scales from an entry level machine to workstation powerhouse. Heck, there are plenty of people who would buy a quad processor Mac if it were offered. I'm not talking about making OS X available to run on older existing PCs or those offered by other companies. That way, Apple is not going to cannablize their hardware sales.
Jobs could then have a x86 machine running OS X dual it out with a x86 machine running Windows using programs like Office, Photoshop, etc. Then the operating system would be the focus of attention not the GHz speed. Even if the windows machine was slightly cheaper and faster, the Mac has a better user interface, more stable OS, and lower total cost of ownership. (I use and own both PCs and Mac and know this from experience)
The bottom line is this - We don't care what CPU is inside - PPC, Intel, AMD, Power4. All we care about is OS, speed, and price. Jobs, give us options 'cause WE TOO LIKE OPTIONS!

Looks interesting. I'd buy it if it was cheap. Unfortunately, $199 is it bit steep, especially when OS X can accomplish much of what it does with a little effort.

I'm not sure I follow you. I could have gotten the second printer for free, but I felt that since I didn't have the computer that came with the first one, and since it was a buy a computer get a free printer deal, it would be cheating Apple out of $100 by getting a second printer. Since they refunded the money, see.
well, you "cheated" apple out of $100 by not returning the printer when you returned the computer.

I went in to check out the product (http://homepage.mac.com/markburgess3/browserTunes/docs.htm), and it actually looks alright. Sure it is early in development, but I think this is a good way for web apps to go.
Step one, build home network
Step two, write neat apps for controlling said home network
Step three, face competition from M$
Step four ...?
Step five, make tons of money.

To late apple, the damage is done! I dont get it, so they use imo a legal loophole to pull the story, but everyone now knows what one fo the problems with the MBP is!

I wouldn't be surprised...currently you have to purchase a licence if your computer can receive TV signals.
AppleMatt
no. no. no.
You only have to pay a licence fee if you USE equipment to receive or record broadcast signals.
This has been discussed here before ad nauseum (because it is an important principle), but OWNERSHIP of a device that can receive broadcast signals is not the same as USING the device (which then requires a licence).

I want an ibook that is a little smaller than the newton. Just take out the big screen, keyboard, and cd. Keep all the connections and ad a little floating pallete to make navigation easier in OS X. It would be like a Pocket PC but it would have the same power as the ibook because all the guts would be almost the same. Apple already has all the parts, the only problem is the price. So, right now even in the 21st century, the price on this kind of technology done right would be too high for the average user. Maybe they would do better to just make an iBook under a thousand. It would be slow for power users, but just fine for school.

I personally hope the new powerbooks are ready for release right now, but delayed because of the recently stopped dock strike. Maybe there is a big container ship sitting there just waiting to be unloaded with a whole bunch of new powerbooks, one with my name on it.
Hey, I can hope right?

Funny story of how it can be abused.
First time playing playing rainbows six multiplayer hostage multiplayer game.
I was in a room with 16 people, everyone was giving orders etc, anyway...
I ran into the church and saw this person at the end who wasnt one of my team so I open fire...
ooops I ahot the hostage - our team lost - end of game
Back in the lobby everyone was screaming WTF WTF WTF
As a coincidence just before we got to the menu someone dropped out.
All there really irrate guys assumed that the guy dropping out killed the hostage. I kept quiet because it was a really scary atmosphere. Anyway these other 14 players decided that they would file complaints against your one who left...
So me 'guilty' by keeping quiet kept my rep in tact and the poor guy who dropped out got his left in tatters...
It's dog eat dog out there :o :p :D :(

Does anyone expect to see updated specs before January? If so, why? I am wondering if Apple will slap more VRAM and a faster G3 into the 12" iBook before January. Seems it could happen within the next 2 months.

Could this perhaps signal a shift away from the education market for Apple?Yes and no. This divestiture allows Apple to concentrate on its core compentencies. As part of the agreement, Pearson will develop educational materials for distribution via iPod. I think that Apple's sale of PowerSchool to Pearson is a win for Pearson, whose core business is education. This deal will accelerate the adoption of the iPod as an education tool, which is very much a win for Apple.
